Our vision and shared values shape the journey. Our overarching goal is to be a responsible corporate citizen that continues to safeguard our established SH&E best practices, while targeting further advances and improvements, in all facets of our business.

In our sustainable development journey, we collaborate with a broad spectrum of stakeholders to improve our economic, social and environmental contributions. In our 2007 annual report, our chief executive, Pat Davies, stated unequivocally: "My challenge to Sasol is to move from our comfort zone of focusing on delivering financial profits alone, but also provide gains for our people, our country and our planet."

Among vital other facets, our global sustainable development commitment focuses on:

  • maintaining sound governance, risk management and compliance practices;
  • building open and constructive stakeholders relations;
  • developing employee skills;
  • upholding human rights and fair labour practices;
  • optimising health and safety practices;
  • reducing risks associated with operating plants and machinery;
  • sustaining social investments, particularly in under-resourced South African and Mozambican communities;
  • promoting black economic empowerment to benefit historically disadvantaged South Africans;
  • adding optimal economic value to raw materials;
  • sustaining financial profitability and growth;
  • reducing emissions, waste and the consumption of water and energy per unit of production; and
  • manufacturing products with due regard for the needs of people and the environment.
